BONE LOSS AND BONE GRAFTING

If you have missing teeth, it is likely that you will also have some degree of bone loss in the jaw. That is because natural tooth roots are intended to stimulate the jaw bone and prevent it from deteriorating. If they are gone, bone loss usually follows.

Dental implants have become a leading tooth replacement solution, but patients also need adequate bone density for them to work. Bone grafting in New London, CT with Dr. Gregory Toback and Dr. Marianne Urbanski is a way to address bone loss so that patients with missing teeth can get the strong, dependable, healthy looking smile they desire.

DENTAL BONE GRAFTING PROCEDURES

Autogenous bone graft: Drs. Toback and Urbanski will take a small amount of bone from the chin and use it to increase the bone density in the jaw. Infection and other complications are unlikely since the material is from the patient’s body. Here is how the procedure is performed:

  1. Drs. Toback and Urbanski administers some anesthetic to the chin and the gum area where bone loss is present.
  2. The gum line is cut with a small incision to see how much bone loss has occurred.
  3. Drs. Toback and Urbanski will make small cut in the chin area, right inside the mouth near the gum line.
  4. Bone and marrow are removed from the chin and the gum tissue is closed up with a few stitches.
  5. Drs. Toback and Urbanski attaches the donor bone to the bone loss site with little dental screws. He may also place additional grafting materials to encourage healing.
  6. The gums are stitched back in place.

Allograft: This procedure is performed the same way as an autogenous graft except that the material is supplied by a bone tissue bank. All donor material is thoroughly screened and classified safe prior to use. Patients who do not wish to have added surgery on their chin may opt for this procedure.

Xenograft: This procedure is also performed the same way as an autogenous graft except that the material is supplied by an animal, usually a cow, which is very easy to obtain. All material is thoroughly screened and classified safe prior to use. Patients who do not wish to have added surgery on their chin may also opt for this procedure.

What to Expect when Having a Bone Grafting Procedure
As with other types of surgery, antibiotics are usually prescribed before and after the procedure. Any post-surgical discomfort can be relieved with pain medication and patients are advised to eat soft foods and liquids until the gums heal. Dental implants are usually placed within six to nine months after the bone graft.

If you have missing teeth and bone loss, dental implants may still be an option. Call Drs. Toback and Urbanski today to find out if bone grafting in New London, CT is right for you.
